Seeking communifies for survivalists
Okay, I am ready to escape NYC by next summer and consider to become a farm girl if needed for a couple of years.
If you have heard of a cooperative individuals who have set up camps or farms (state unimportant), please post info here or message me. |
Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
There are sustainable intentional communities popping up all over the place.
A lot of them are populated by more left-leaning, eco friendly hippie types. That might turn off some people here, but I wouldn't let politics get in the way of finding a good community to live in. And I'd rather live with a couple dirty hippies than some of the paranoid wackos that run around the survivalist circles. I think this place looks pretty cool: http://www.dancingrabbit.org/ They're almost completely off the grid. Grow their own food. Electric from solar and wind. Vehicles run on biodiesel. |
Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
I would prefer the paranoid survivalist wackos to the dirty hippies.
Would Ted Nugent be considered a paranoid wacko? He's definitely not a dirty hipppie |

Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
I'd go to central/south America - ex pat communities all over. I never thought I would say it...but I am feeling that it is true and working my own angle on it now.
I don't think that the type of "regular" N. American folks I would commune with are ready for it. Panama and Costa Rica are looking really sweet. You can sustain yourself for about 3-5k /year. Residency is the only angle you have to fgure out based on your connections/financial situation. This is sitting on a beach - fishing, sunning, surfing and playing around in general - not harvesting crops and digging a bunker .... but it's my kinda bug'in out! |
Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
You guys can knock them dirty hippies, but I think they will be better situated when tshtf than most folks; including the legendary indomitable GIM member. They already have their systems in place; they're already living off the grid, whereas most folks on this forum are not living on their homestead/bugout location.
It's about 200 miles from the nearest big city, so I don't think they'd have to worry about defense. There might be some libertarian minded communities like Dancing Rabbit but I'm not aware of them. |

You WILL excuse me, but being a responsible community member, I don't require the assistance from law enforcement to keep me and mine safe. We are even looking into leaving where we are now and moving further from a given community. |
Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
There is a long standing fo-shizzle commune in Summertown, TN called The Farm. I have visited to partake in some of their publicly offered courses on sustainable agriculture and shiitake production. I can't speak for their effectiveness in protecting themselves from militia but they are definitely making strides in sustainability and reuse. They are dirty hippies, too.

They can smell your food and your women. Headshots and chainsaws.

Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
Not exactly a survivalist community, but sounds good. Any Free State-ers at GIM?

Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
I've got a friend who's off the grid in NH. His house looks like it's built around the fire wood, but he's definitely ready for these cold winters.

Re: Seeking communifies for survivalists
All -
O boy, where to begin? 1969; Rogue River valley, Southern Oregon. The clash was between the dirty hippies in their "Communes" And the strung out hyper-survivalists in their "Compounds." There was a third identifiable subspecies in that thar time, Namely "them redneck hippies." As I am a charter member of that flavor, I can assure you that in addition to Cutting edge development of off-grid techne (Remember the Whole Earth Catalog?) And organic gardening, And the careful development of a significant level Of trust - or not - with you neighbors, Plus working a fulltime job (because that's what it took), There was plenty of alcohol, tobacco and firearms In the mix. I built a 10' x 24' cabin way the hell back in the woods. It's still there - I heard, years later, that somebody Wrote a novel in it. Interestingly enough, from a strategic viewpoint We chose to stay under the radar. We just weren't fanatic material. We were just general practitioners of living the best we could With what we had and............. What we could envision as the next really slick way Of living lean and fine and not Completely trashing the world that our children, And our children's children would have to face. I still hold to those ideals. scyth |
